Quilted Blessings is a special ministry of the Loomis Basin Congregational United Church of Christ. Members and friends create one-of-kind quilts for those in need. Our quilts are distributed locally to shelters, hospice and pediatric wards. At Christmas, quilts are provided to area families in need through our Christmas Angel program. As crises develop and transportation is available, we send quilts to far corners of the world. We’ve sent quilts to Afghanistan, Iraq, Uganda, Kenya, Bolivia and Peru. In addition, our quilts have made their way to victims of Hurricane Katrina, tornadoes in the Midwest, wild fires in California, the tsunami in Japan and to veterans.
Anyone is welcome to attend our quilting workshops. If you don’t know how to quilt, we’ll help you learn. If you don’t want to quilt, but you like to knit or crochet, we have simple projects you can work on. Knitted/crocheted scarves, hats and baby blankets are welcome.
Join us at one of our workshops and develop relationships with other people dedicated to providing tangible gifts that express love for one another in our community and the world.
Do I need to know how to quilt?
No, but basic sewing skills help. However, Quilted Blessings is a very supportive group and we’ll teach you what you need to know!
Do I need to have a sewing machine?
No, but if you have one and are comfortable using it, please bring it. We can assist you getting it to/from your vehicle if necessary. Otherwise we have a couple of loaners for workshops.
I’m not really interested in making a whole quilt but I’d like to help. Is there anything else I can do?
Yes, you can help sort or cut fabrics for kits. We can also use some help pinning/tying quilts. If you enjoy hand sewing, you can sew labels on quilts or finish binding on them. You can also stop by to help with set-up or take down.
How do you determine where the quilts go?
We have some very dedicated people who make sure that the quilts go where they are needed.
I already make cuddle quilts for my guild. Can I come to your workshop to work on my guild cuddle quilts?
Absolutely! Although we put Quilted Blessings labels on quilts that are turned in to us, you are welcome to work on cuddle quilts for your guild. It doesn’t matter whose label ends up on a quilt for someone in need.
I have some fabric I’ll never use. Do you want it?
We are always grateful for fabric donations. Our quilts are made using cotton fabrics. If we receive fabric donations that we are unlikely to use, we will find a home for them such as the Second Blessings thrift store or a school.
When and where do you meet?
We meet on Sundays about nine times a year in our church at 6440 King Road in Loomis. Workshops run from about 11:30 to 4:45. Get on our e-mail list for the schedule and workshop reminders.
